Background Information
Together with the Lippeverband (LV), the Emschergenossenschaft (EG) forms the largest wastewater utility in Germany. Within the scope of the new construction project of the Emscher sewer system (AKE), the requirement was to reduce the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentration in the air of the sewer by exhaust air extraction. In the exhaust air resulting from this process, the odor potentials typical for wastewater are present. In order to avoid odor nuisance in the surrounding area, the entire first construction phase of the Emscher sewer, over a length of 26 km, was equipped with 31 UV systems from uviblox GmbH for exhaust air purification at 24 locations. By the process of photo oxidation, our systems successfully remove unpleasant odors and H2S from the exhaust air.

Aerosols and particles are removed from the exhaust air by upstream mist eliminators and particle filters. This serves to protect the downstream UV reactor and prevents contamination by solids and liquid droplets. The pre-cleaned exhaust air then enters the UV reactor, where the pollutants and odors are broken down by means of photo oxidation.
A downstream residual ozone destructor (ROD) supports the elimination of odorous substances and prevents that excess ozone leaves the exhaust air purification system. The cleaned exhaust air is released into the environment via a chimney and meets the required clean gas values of <200 GE/m³. The plants were built in modular design. The design of the housings made of stainless steel allows for outdoor installation. The compact design results in a very small foot print of the systems. The use of modern ICA technology allows the remote control and monitoring of the plants from the central control room.
